Hi guys, I’m Darren, proud owner of The Little Rig. I’m known for introducing the worlds first chopped, tray and canopy JB74 Jimny!
What model and year Jimny do you own?
I own a 2019 JB74.
Favourite Jimny feature?
The short wheel base!
Do you have a nickname for your Jimny?
The Little Rig.
What’s been your most memorable experience with your Jimny?
Doing The Old Tele track and taking every hard line possible (Palm Creek, Gunshot, Nolan’s etc) and doing it easily.
Why is a Jimny perfect for Queenslanders?
Because we have a great mix of beautiful beaches and tough tracks to choose from.
Manual or auto transmission?
Manual because I like to feel ‘involved’ in the drive and it’s a bigger test of skill off-road.
Original 3 door or 5 door (XL) fan?
3 door for sure but I have plenty of friends with the 5 doors and they’re great!
Who rides shotgun in your Jimny?
My wife Loz.
What’s your best Jimny driving tip for off road (or anywhere)?
My biggest tips for tough off-roading are:
a) Always steer with the slope/rut. Don’t try to fight against it.
b) Never stomp the brakes on a steep drop in or deep rut. It feels un-natural but it so vital.
Got any Jimny life hacks to share?
If you flood your Jimny a lot off-road, remove the carpet permanently so you can just pull the drainage plugs and be on your way. You’re welcome 🙂
Favourite Jimny colour?
White. Every mod looks great on a white Jimny.
Favourite Jimny accessory?
Reduction Gears!
What mods have you done to your Jimny?
There’s sooo many but in a nutshell: Front and rear air lockers, Harrop Supercharger, reduction gears, rear disc brake conversion, huge front brakes, 35” tyres, 4” lift, Ute conversion with alloy tray, ceramic coated headers and custom exhaust, front and rear winches, bullbar, big sound system, long range fuel tank etc etc.
What mods do you plan to do to your Jimny?
Not too sure what’s next, but there will always be something fun to do!
Where do you see you and your Jimny in 5 years?
Hopefully just laying low and cruising around on some iconic tracks. Not so heavily involved in social media.
If you could make your own Jimny bumper sticker, what would it say?
My favourite saying with my Jimny is ‘Every Pin Strip Tells a Story!’
Most drool-worthy Jimny rig you’ve ever seen?
I have a couple of favourite and they’re also great mates. Alec (@JB74.jpg) and Joey (@jj0033). These guys are super clever and build some really cool things for their Jimny’s. Both can drive too!!
If you could take your Jimny off-road anywhere in the world, where would you take it?
Australia has the best off-roading in my opinion and there’s so many tracks I’m still yet to do. But also NZ would be awesome too!
What’s a local drive on your bucket list?
Simpson desert first up. I’ve also unfortunately had 3 trips to VIC High Country cancelled so I’m keen on that. Plus Tassie for sure!
Words of wisdom for anyone thinking about buying a Jimny?
It’s not a sports car on road so don’t expect it to be. It’s fun to drive and will make you smile, so embrace the smiles!
f your followers see you off road, please….
Beep and wave and go absolutely wild with it cause I promise you I’ll be doing the same back at you!
What are your off-road recco's?
Track / location: Old Tele Track
Description: Australia’s most iconic Track
Level of difficulty: 7/10
Best time of year to do it: June – August
What you need to know before you go: You’re going to be in deep water, a lot of mud and brutal corrugations. Make sure your car is built well for that and carry plenty of essential spares just in case.
