And here’s the heart of the matter when it comes to four-wheel-drive systems … the Jimny has a part-time 4WD system with three modes: The first is two-wheel-drive-high-range (2H) which delivers better fuel economy and enhanced cornering on paved roads. The second is four-wheel-drive-high (4H) which provides extra grip needed for off-road use – primarily slippery surfaces like snow and sand.
The third mode is four-wheel-drive-Low (4L) which uses a transfer gear to deliver even more torque at low speeds enabling the Jimny to climb very steep hills and traverse rugged terrain. The shift lever provides the driver with a better feel than dash-mounted buttons used on the previous Jimny. It also eliminates the chance of a selection button malfunctioning due to spilt drinks or dust ingress. Bottom line: Two gear levers – true four wheel-drive.
