FROM BEACH TO BOARDING GATE

Okay, so what has a plane got in common with a Jimny? ‘Plenty’ is the answer and perhaps none more-so than when you are trying to get to or from Barra Airport in the Hebrides, west of Scotland. You see, Barra Airport is a beach – a stretch of flat sand that planes land on when transporting residents and visitors to and from the islands. Now that seems straight-forward enough, but then the questions arises: “How am I going to get my bags off the plane and carry them to the roadway?” That’s where the highly-modified Jimny pictured to the left comes into the picture.

The Jimny has been modified by Dave Johnson at Shropshire Quads. He’s a specialist in preparing unique, go-anywhere vehicles. The modified Jimny ute is 250mm longer and 35kg lighter than the standard Jimny.

So next time you touch down at Barra Airport, you’ll see the local team stacking your luggage into the back of the Jimny ute and driving it up the beach to the terminal.
